Max Brett was born so profoundly deaf that he slept soundly as builders were drilling through a wall next to his crib. After surgery to fit him with cochlear implants he now awakes every day to a new world of fascinating noises, not least the sound of his own name.
His parents, Rebecca and Ian, captured the heart-warming moment the implants were turned on in May, just after his first birthday, and Max turned to his mother in wide-eyed, open-mouthed astonishment.
The video shows Max happily playing with a ball and building blocks in a hospital room before doctors begin to play loud sounds. He freezes and stares at the toy bricks in his hands in bewilderment, appearing to think the noise must be coming
